Like a Weather App for Your Websites
Whether you have one site you want to watch, or twenty, see a quick overview of them all in a big beautiful list, with the last hour of response-time data graphed in the background. It is like looking at the weather, but for your web sites. Sites that are having a problem will automatically sort to the top of the list, so you'll see them immediately. You can see the last response code we got back from the site, as well as the overall time it took, and download speed to our servers.
Vigil 2 also takes advantage of iOS 8's new resizable text. If you'd like to shrink down, or expand, the size of the visual elements, Vigil will respond to your settings.
Push Notifications and Email Alert Delivery
If our servers detect a problem we'll let you know. By default, we'll send you both a push notification, as well as an email. There is no limit to the number of devices we support on each account for push notifications.
You can adjust your delivery options on the Settings screen in the app.
Get Detailed Information on Your Site
When you need to drill down into a site, you can get detailed performance information with a simple tap. Each site is presented with the latest information, and a scrollable graph of the history of it's response times. On the bottom of the page you can see a list of all the recent alerts that were sent out for the site.

If you tap on the response graph, we'll break down each check even further, letting you know the response code, overall response time, download speed, as well as the time to lookup the site in DNS, the time to first make a connection, the time to negotiate with the server, and the time for the first byte of data to arrive. You can use this information to determine where the slowdowns are occurring, and whether your issues with slow performance might be network or server-related.
Ping a Site Right From Your Phone
Use the Ping button next to the response time details to bring up the Ping Console. We'll use all your site information to bypass our monitoring servers and run a check right from your phone. This lets you quickly check on the status of a site from different locations.
Easily Add or Edit a Website
Give us a URL and we'll take care of the rest. We can monitor both http and https protocols, and will even let you know if there is an issue with your SSL certificate setup.
You can also specify an alert sensitivity level. This is used to determine when to send a push notification or email alert to you. We support four levels of sensitivity. Vigilant, Normal, Relaxed and Off. Vigilant will send you a DOWN alert on the first failure, and only send out an UP alert after we've gotten five successful checks. Normal will look for three failures in a row before it will consider a site DOWN and send an alert, and will wait for one successful check before sending the all-clear. The Relaxed sensitivity requires ten failures in a row before we send an alert, and will send an up after a single successful check. The Off setting means that we will continue to check the site, but won't send any alerts. If you want to keep a site in the database, but disable the checks, you can toggle the Monitoring Enabled switch.
Powerful Monitoring Options
In addition to the basic monitoring options that all plans receive, we have additional options for subscribers at the Professional and Business tiers.
Custom Status Codes allow you to customize which response codes we consider valid. Normally, we consider anything in the 2xx range of response codes a success. If you would like to change this, you can select more targeted or non-standard response codes.
Content Match checking allows you to give us a custom string. We will ask for the entire BODY of the HTTP request, and look for that string in the content. If we don't find it, we will consider the site DOWN.
By default we report any SSL errors as a down site. Report SSL Errors allows you to toggle off this behavior. For example, if you have a self-signed certificate on a development site you might want to turn off SSL error reporting.
We will continue to roll out additional monitoring options in the near future. If you are a Business Plan subscriber and have additional monitoring needs, feel free to get in touch with us. There are several options available on our backend monitoring server that are not yet exposed in the iOS client. These include custom content-headers, POST and PUT requests, and regex checks of the returned content. We'd be happy to set those up for you.
Convenient Web Client
Vigil also comes with a client you can access from any browser. You can view the status of all your sites, along with response-time graphs. Add a new site, or edit any of your current sites and all your changes are reflected in the mobile app. You can also manage your account and subscription payments. The Vigil Web client works in almost all desktop and mobile browsers, so you can use it anywhere.
Today View Extension
Sometimes you just want to quickly check in on your websites. With iOS 8 we've added a new Today View extension that puts a list of your websites right in the Notification Center so your site status is never more than a drag away. Like with our main list view, we'll bubble up any sites that are having issues to the top. Tapping on an entry will open up that website right in the app.
You can adjust the number of sites we should list in the Today View widget on the Settings screen in the app.
Weekly Summary Reports
Every week, we'll generate a report with a summary of everything that happened, along with an uptime percentage for all your sites. You can use this information to track how well you are doing over the long-term, and evaluate the reliability of your hosting provider, server infrastructure or network.
